Read on to learn more about homes for sale in Haughton, LA, and what you can expect when you move here.

WELCOME TO HAUGHTON, LOUISIANA!

The town of Haughton, LA is around 16 miles east of the cities of Bossier and Shreveport

Situated in Bossier Parish in the northwestern part of Louisiana, Haughton is a town occupying 5.72 square miles and populated by 4,539 residents (as of the 2020 census).  It’s located 15 miles east of Bossier City, the second most populous city in the Shreveport-Bossier City metropolitan area and the center of Bossier Parish. Haughton is also 17 miles away from Shreveport, the most populous city in North Louisiana and arguably an important commercial and cultural center in the entire state.

The vibe in Haughton is suburban rural, which basically means that you’ll find very little by way of towering commercial buildings in the community. What awaits you here are numerous single-family homes, along with plenty of open spaces, from vacant land to farms and ranches.

In 2019, Haughton was named one of the most secure small towns in America, ranking in the top 100. The list is based on recent FBI crime report statistics and census population data.

The beginnings of a small town: a marriage and a merger

Haughton was created when the land of two families, the Haughtons and the Lawrences, were combined.

William and Harriet Hassell Haughton brought their family from Tennessee to Mississippi. They lived in a town in southeast Bossier in 1845 and moved down to Fifi Bayou before finally settling on 2,000 acres of land that was eventually dubbed “Haughton Place.” Liking the place immensely, Haughton wrote to his friends in Mississippi to encourage them to move to his neck of the woods. David Lawrence heeded the call, acquiring 7,000 acres of land. The beginnings  of the town came into sharper focus  when one of David Lawrence’s sons, Paul, married William Haughton’s daughter, Mary Jane.

The arrival of the railroads transformed Haughton, bringing in products and prompting the opening of a variety of businesses such as sawmills, and boarding houses. Mary Jane sold land to the railroads for $20 in 1881. While the town was initially called Lawrenceville, a name change was warranted in 1884 because the train passed through another town also called Lawrenceville.

In 1885, Mary Jane turned over another 80 acres for a railroad station and began selling lots, which helped transform Haughton into a thriving location. Haughton was reclassified from being a village into a town in September 1975, having reached a population of 1,000. It is expected to be considered for reclassification into a city once the population reaches 5,000.

Today, Haughton is considered a bedroom community for those who work in Bossier City and Shreveport, and was once even a favored location for families working at Barksdale Air Force Base.
