A SHORT HISTORY OF SHREVEPORT

  • Shreveport was founded in 1836 by the Shreve Town Company, a corporation tasked to develop a village at the intersection of the Texas Trail and Red River. The town was located on an overland route that previously led to Mexico and subsequently used to drive cattle from Texas to Nebraska.
  • Shreve Town Company and the village of Shreve were named in honor of Captain Henry Miller Shreve, the commander of the US Army Corps of Engineers. Before the village’s development, Shreve cleared over 180 miles of debris clogging the Red River.
  • The city’s original boundaries were plotted within land sold by the Caddo Native Americans to the Shreve Town Company in 1835.
  • Caddo Parish in northwestern Louisiana was formed out of Natchitoches Parish in 1838. Shreve Town became the parish seat, and the city of Shreveport remains the seat of Caddo Parish to this day.
  • Shreve Town was incorporated as the town of Shreveport in 1839 and incorporated as a city in 1871.
  • Between Shreveport and its sister city, Bossier, are six historic districts and many landmarks included on the National Register of Historic Places.
